Wall colors

It can be hard to pick a wall color.. there are so many things to consider.. where do you begin?

My approach is to first and foremost look at what you can not change... usually this is floor and fixtures as a renter. You will not want to pretend these things are not there just because you don't like them. embrace what you have and make it feel like a part of what you're creating. The second thing is to look at what you are not going to change.. furniture or a large piece of art. Then you want to look at the colors your going to be painting the walls that you can see from that room. This is a subtle yet important thing. If you can sit in one room and see another and the colors clash or are not in the same palette you will notice and it will make the visual enjoyment of the space suffer. Then you should consider the amount and kind of light that the room gets. This can get tricky but really you should adjust the brightness of a color to mix well with the kind of light as this will affect how the color looks in the room.

That said, I've been brainstorming about colors for the different rooms in our house.

For the bathroom we have a mostly clean white space except for a very unsightly old sink which is a white and beige marbled plastic of sorts with cracks in it. This is easy enough to match so its open season on this room except you can see this room from both the kitchen and the living room. the color im enjoying for this space at the moment is a deep yet not particularly dark blue. Like this one. I found this swatch at www.colourlovers.com an interesting site I just stumbled upon.


For the living room we have a particular shade of sea foam green reoccurring in several of our furniture pieces and the current rug. Then we have a tile inlay around the fireplace that is various shades of blues. We also have a large painting that includes many dark reds blacks and a splash of gold. The last few living rooms i've painted have all been a golden buttery color. I would like to get away from this but it really seems to work well with the painting and creating a warm inviting place to relax. So I'm thinking maybe a new warmer shade would be good. Although I think the space is kind of dark so it might need to be adjusted because of that.
